Undesired effects of reinforcement may include conflict during the transition from the reinforced activity to the undesired activity, satiation, or accidental reduction in the probability of other behaviors. If reinforcement contingencies are significant, they can lead to maladaptive behaviors, especially if the reinforcer becomes less available. These contingencies can have a negative impact on the health and well-being of the student, such as addictions.

The unintended effects of extinction may manifest in behavioral outbursts, a dangerous increase in behavior, or traumatic effects. This may be similar to the concept of 'deafening' a person, as it is said colloquially in Mexico, and the negative effects that this entails. Effects such as spontaneous recovery can also be observed, where behavior returns briefly for no apparent reason, and sometimes desirable behaviors can be accidentally 'ignored' and lost.
The unintended effects of punishment may involve legal difficulties, ethical violations, aggression, or evasion. These can manifest as positive or negative punishments.
