Socially mediated verbal behavior is behavior that occurs when one person interacts with another person. This behavior is characterized by the fact that it is reinforced by the other person.

Difference between verbal and vocal behavior

Verbal behavior and vocal behavior are not the same. Verbal behavior is any behavior that serves a communicative function, while vocal behavior is any behavior that produces sounds.

A non-vocal student may engage in verbal behavior using Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) or other forms of communication. For example, a nonverbal student may use a picture board to ask for something or may use a voice communication device to say "hello."

Types of training for socially mediated verbal behavior

There are several types of training that can be used to teach socially mediated verbal behavior. Some of the most common types are:

  • Command Training: This type of training is used to teach a student to perform a specific action. For example, a teacher may train a student to say "up" to get a ball. The teacher gives the ball to the student when he says "up."

  • Echoic training: This type of training is used to teach a student to repeat what another person says. For example, a teacher can train a student to repeat the name of an animal. The teacher says "dog" and the student repeats "dog."

  • Touch training: This type of training is used to teach a student to associate a word or phrase with an object or action. For example, a teacher can train a student to associate the word "water" with a glass of water. The teacher gives the student a glass of water and says "water." The student repeats "water."

  • Interval training: This type of training is used to teach a student how to maintain a conversation. The teacher asks the student questions and the student answers. The teacher continues asking questions until the student stops responding.

The importance of language and communication therapists

Language and communication therapists can be very valuable in helping students develop socially mediated verbal behavior. These professionals know the inner workings of language and can design personalized training programs to meet the individual needs of each student.
