Behavior
Behavior

Is any observable and measurable action an organism performs while interacting with its environment.

Examples:

  • A child walking to the door.

  • A person talking on the phone.

  • A dog barking.

  • A cat rubbing against its owner.

  • A student thinking about an exam answer.

Response
Response

Is a single observable instance of behavior occurring at a specific moment.

Examples:

  • Raising your hand in class.

  • Kicking a ball.

  • Smiling.

  • Saying "hi."

Response Class
Response Class

Consists of multiple responses that achieve the same effect on the environment.

Examples:

  • Paying with a debit card or cash (both result in a purchase).

  • Calling or emailing to schedule an appointment (both result in a confirmed appointment).

  • Locking a door with a key or chain (both block entry).

  • Washing clothes in a washing machine or by hand (both clean the clothes).

Understanding behavior, responses, and response classes helps clarify how organisms interact with their environment and achieve their goals.
